CARP RODS
Precision-built carp rods with speed, balance, and feel at their core
Hi-‘S’ carp rods are built around a simple idea: remove weight, keep power, and let the blank recover with absolute cleanliness. The blanks are exceptionally slim and light, yet powerful—helping the less confident caster and rewarding the capable with a rod that unloads crisply and tracks true.
Because the tip diameter is very slim, the actions are semi-fast, with stiffer mid to butt sections. That makes the end of the top section lighter, aiding recovery after unloading during the cast. Less tip bounce means tighter accuracy and longer distances—friction is reduced, the trajectory stays cleaner, and the rod feels calmer at the critical moment. The same ultra-responsive tip also helps when playing fish, transmitting what’s happening at the hook without feeling nervous.
The full-length 1k weave looks the part, but it also asks something of the build. As the weave material is heavier than the main blank carbon, the blanks are precision ground to remove weight from the very tip and preserve recovery speed. As with Free Spirit tradition, we don’t add paint or lacquer; instead, we use our Perdurable finish to keep the blank looking right for many years.
Complementing the blank, we fit the Hi-‘S’ Clone reel seat made from the same carbon as the rod. That continuity of material transmits more feel through the blank—ideal for leading, feeling for features, or avoiding weeds and debris.

Builds
Alongside our full custom service, we aim to keep stock builds in an array of guide options, and we stock a vast array of components to bring genuine individual character to each rod. We hold large stocks of these components and also keep additional parts in stock such as the most popular ALPS reel seats, so both stock builds and bespoke projects can be delivered with the finish you want.
We build Hi-‘S’ in several established formats—classic, modern and ultra-modern—without losing the Hi-‘S’ feel.

Recommendations
Small, intimate waters
The lighter options—2½lb and 2¾lb—shine where control and forgiveness matter more than brute force. They load easily, cushion sudden lunges, and make close-range fishing feel precise rather than fussy.
All-rounders
The 3lb and 3¼lb are the heart of the range—true “do everything” tools for most carp fishing, balancing casting performance with enjoyable fish-playing.
12’6” versatility
The 12’6” 3¼lb is a superb general rod with extra lever and balance; the 12’6” 3½lb is often the answer when you want one rod to cover almost everything.
The ultimate all-rounder
If one test curve consistently earns that title, it’s 3½lb—available in 12’, 12’6” and 13’—a blend of crisp recovery, control and reserve power.
Long-range performance – the ’ives
As seen in the table, there are two Hi-‘S’ive 12’ rods. The original ‘ive is stiffer in the tip and makes an excellent long-range bag rod. We felt the range was missing a rod with action more akin to the 13’ Hi-‘S’ive, which is softer and more responsive in the upper part of the top section. This helps with casting smaller leads and also with the use of lighter lines to gain maximum distance. The result was the addition of the Hi-‘S’ive 12’ ER to the range—ER standing for Extra Responsive—and the ER has proven to be a very popular choice for those wanting one set of rods to go anywhere, home or abroad.
Ultra long-range – the 200’s and 220’s
The 200’s (12’ and 13’) are rods that bang leads and bags to extreme ranges whilst maintaining good fish playing—but they need a heavier lead to get the best out of the blank. The 220 finesses down the tip to be more responsive, load quicker and allow smaller leads to be used.
SPECIFICATIONS
Weights shown are for the S-Lite ceramic-lined build with stainless fittings. Weights reduce if opting for a black build, with the lightest typically being an abbreviated black build specified with Seaguide TDG guides. Fitting an ALPS seat will increase weights due to the construction of the seat.
Blank and rod weights may vary slightly. We use stainless steel collars and butt caps for durability which add a little to overall weight, but being on the handle should not adversely affect balance.
