Helical SPM Rods

Helical SPM rods are built to complement the main carp range in both look and feel while being tuned specifically for spodding and marking. Using the same Hankook and Toray Helical carbon lay-up as the fishing rods, the blanks are given extra power through the butt and mid-section to cope with the repeated loading of fully packed spombs, large spods and heavy marker leads.

Across the SPM range, the tips are made deliberately responsive to help maintain accuracy at shorter ranges and to provide a positive cushion when you hit the clip. This softens the impact, helping the cast to land and settle cleanly right on the spot rather than bouncing back, and also reduces the risk of crack-offs – particularly when using finer braids or mono. Many anglers now favour slightly finer monofilament for spodding because braid, while very direct, is more prone to wind knots and is easily picked up by crosswinds, which can pull the cast off line. The way the Helical SPM tips recover is designed with this in mind, giving you a little extra margin of safety when clipping up and keeping casts more consistent in anything but flat-calm conditions.

The 10ft SPM is designed to complement the range of 10ft carp rods, giving you the same feel and timing in the cast so it’s easy to be consistent when baiting and fishing at the same ranges. Because leverage is greater with shorter rods, the test curve is deliberately lowered to suit smaller spods and spombs, helping you maintain accuracy at closer ranges without feeling over-gunned. It is perfectly capable of casts to around 80 yards plus, yet equally at home being swung or flicked underarm for tight, close-range baiting down the margins or under overhanging cover.

The longer 12ft and 13ft SPM models step things up for more demanding work. That additional backbone makes it easy to hit the clip hard time after time, yet the same responsive tip philosophy still gives you feedback when dragging a marker across gravel, clay or silt. By matching the main carp rod lengths in 10ft, 12ft and 13ft, these SPM models make it much simpler to bait accurately at the ranges you actually fish – whether that’s short work on small waters or pushing everything to the horizon on big pits and reservoirs.

Build and guide options mirror the rest of the Helical family, so your SPM setup looks and feels like part of the same system: DPS18 reel seats on the 10’ models, DNPS20 reel seats on the longer rods, modern all-black fittings and a choice of SS-lined or “Braid Friendly” ceramic-lined guides, depending on how and where you fish.
