Description

FLOAT RODS

Progressive Float Actions. Accessible Specialist Performance.

The Hi-‘S’ Special Power Floats have long been a favourite with specialist anglers—whether you’re targeting tench, chub, big roach, rudd and crucians on stillwaters, or trotting for barbel on running water. They’re built to the highest specification using Hi-‘S’ carbons for an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, and while we make no apology for the price of those rods, we recognise that not every budget stretches that far. The Tamer Power Float range was created in direct response: rods designed to cover the same roles, with the same Free Spirit thinking behind the actions, at a more attainable price point.

Even at this more accessible level, the blanks are produced using the same proven approach to strength-to-weight and stability, integrating Japanese 40t and 30t carbon with resin content kept below 25%. Layers are wrapped alternately at 0° and 90° for strength and hoop stability, then further reinforced with 3mm bi-axis carbon tape at 45°, helping reduce twist and keeping recovery clean when you’re casting, mending line, or steering fish away from trouble.

They’re finished in our ‘Perdurable’ blank finish—meaning no paint or lacquer is applied after precision grinding—so the quality of the carbon can be admired for years to come. The blanks are also supplied in a modern matt finish, helping prevent unwanted “flash” that could spook fish in clear water conditions.

As with the Hi-‘S’ models, we favour actions produced with longer section lengths and fewer joints, so the 12’ and 13’ rods are built as two-piece models, and the 15’ as a three-piece. The benefit is immediate in the hand—lighter where it matters, cleaner through the curve, and more progressive as pressure builds.

The Tamer Power Float 12’ is aimed primarily at stillwater fishing for tench, bream, roach, rudd and crucians. It carries a sensitive tip for bite registration and float control, but the power builds progressively through the middle and butt sections, helping prevent fish reaching snags—and giving you the authority to recover them if they do.

The Tamer Power Float 13’ is the range’s natural all-rounder. It covers the same stillwater duties as the 12’, but adds extra reach and line control for rivers when targeting chub, barbel or grayling. With only a single central overfit joint, it remains light to hold and feels smoother than an equivalent three-piece would. It’s equally at home with a stick float at close range, or with larger pellet wagglers to the far bank when fishing over-depth for chub and barbel.

When the job demands maximum line control—whether that’s trotting a stick float properly, working slider floats, or simply reaching further with a waggler—the Tamer Power Float 15’ comes into its own. It’s designed for bigger rivers such as the Wye, Trent and Severn, as well as larger continental rivers where stronger tackle and better control are often essential.

Each rod is finished with a full cork handle, a Fuji DPS M16 reel seat, and stainless steel butt cap and collars for dependable use across many seasons. A subtle final touch comes in the form of a discreet green band above the logo, keeping the cosmetics refined and unmistakably “Tamer”. Supplied in a pouch-style bag designed to accommodate the rod set up with the reel attached, they suit mobile anglers and opportunistic sessions perfectly.

Recommendations

Stillwater tench, bream and silver fish: 12’ 2-piece (RTPM555)

Is the specialist stillwater choice—sensitive at the tip with progressive power to keep fish moving and away from cover.

Best all-rounder for mixed venues: 13’ 2-piece (RTPM556)

Offers the most versatility—ideal for stillwaters and rivers, with extra reach for control and a smooth feel thanks to the simple two-piece build.

Trotting, sliders and bigger rivers: 15’ 3-piece (RTPM557)

Is the one when line control is everything—perfect for serious float fishing on large rivers and for longer-range waggler work.

If you fish barbel on the float

Choose the 13’ for most river situations, but step up to the 15’ when you need to hold more line off the water and dictate the trot on faster, wider flows.

Weight note: Blank and rod weights may vary slightly from those quoted. We use stainless steel collars and butt caps for durability which will add a little to the rod’s overall weight but being on the handle should not adversely affect its balance.
